“I like coaching because I like trying to solve a puzzle a little bit.”

We caught up with Coach Jason Gray at the Michigan coaches clinic, the night before his Hall of Fame induction. Coach Gray leads the girls’ program at Goodrich High School, and last season his team went 29–0.
“The right answer here is the relationships with the kids, and that’s true. I’ve really been able to develop some really special relationships with our players when they’re with us, and even after they’re gone.”
“I think I like coaching because I like trying to solve a puzzle a little bit. How can we make ourselves the best version of ourselves, and how can we beat who we’re playing? … I’ve always looked at putting a team together and trying to do what’s best for this group. It’s been a lot of fun for me.”
“We just had a lot of kids who were willing to do whatever we asked them to do, really played their roles well.”
“It’s basketball. It’s just basketball, man. Don’t worry about being a girl playing basketball. Just play basketball.”
“Basketball is great. It’s fun. It’s hard, but it’s rewarding, and people love it, and they should continue to grow the game.”
“Have fun. The girls have to play basketball at practice and have fun. Girls especially, they’re really looking for relationships. They’re really looking to have fun. They want to play with their friends. Make sure they’re playing.”
